At Usborne Canada, we pride ourselves for the inclusion, visibility, and diversity shown in Usborne titles. In the world of children’s literature, this is fundamental. Children need to not only see themselves within the pages they read, but also have access to issues that matter, in a way that speaks to them at their level. Working with Usborne Canada allows Consultants to share titles surrounding racism, diversity, and inclusion with children across the country.
Black History month may be what sparks an initial conversation, however, it’s important for us as parents, caregivers, teachers, and friends to continue to talk to our children about these critical issues.
The 2024 theme for Black History Month is: “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate; a Future to Build”.
This theme celebrates the rich past and present contributions and accomplishments of Black people in Canada, while aspiring to embrace new opportunities for the future.
USBORNE’S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION IN THEIR BOOKS:
“We commit to ensure that every child can relate to the characters in our books, as well as learning about people who are different from them. There is still a gap to close between where we are now, and where we need to be. We are working on books for our future publishing programme which tackle racism and inequality in a way that will help parents to talk about these issues with their children.”
